When my husband and I retired to the Ozarks I finally had the time to explore all those crafts that a full time job did not allow enough time for. One of the major interests I had was in making Soap. I had used those wonderful, creamy bars in the past and marveled at the craft that went into making them but never thought I would be able to master it. The thought of making soap brought images to mind of Granny Clampet by the cement pond and the witches of Macbeth. I attended a demonstration on the Cold Process for making Soap and then after a hands on class and many books later I started making my own soap. At first my family and friends were my testers and finally I went to the craft shows to let the public see what wonderful Soap I had created.
I create my soaps in small batches using Goat Milk, filtered rain water, food grade oils, and of course Sodium Hydroxide (Lye). I use cosmetic grade Fragrance and or Essential Oils with no artificial preservatives. My soaps are made with vegetable oils and I do not use animal fats unless specifically requested. One of the things that makes my handcrafted soap so superior is that I do not remove the Glycerin. Glycerin is a humectants and emollient, which draws moisture to your skin. Cold process soaps contain approximately 25% Glycerin. Commercial soap makers extract the glycerin this leaving approximately 3% glycerin and then market the glycerin back to you in other forms. If the bars of soap feel moist it is the Glycerin which attracts the moisture on the surface of the bars. Once you try handcrafted, cold process soap and realize what a difference it makes, you’ll be hooked.
